Sugar Detox

I can’t believe it’s already June! Not only has June always felt like the “true” beginning of Summer for me, but it’s also around the time of having pretty consistent hot weather. This also means, i’m pretty consistently wearing shorts and summer dresses. Since I hate being cold, I usually look forward to this transition and relish every second of being out on warm sunny days. This year? Not so much.

While I still love Summer, I feel like i’ve been struggling to maintain a happy weight for the past few months. Since January i’ve become a magnet for about 7-10 extra pounds… It’s not a lot, I know. But for me, it was enough to push me up a pant size, making me feel totally uncomfortable just being in any of my normal clothes (Yoga Pants, I love you). I know i’m by no means overweight, but I don’t want to just become okay with my new size and throw in the towel. I want my energy back and I want to feel good again in all of my clothes (I especially would like to fully button ALL of my work pants again!). Most of all, I want to take care of my body and feel healthier. It’s something that’s always been important to me, but I guess the last few months I’ve indulged just a little too much in sweets and savory foods. Chocolate - Edited

I know that I will be happier and feel better knowing i’m not carrying around extra weight thats really not needed. So I decided to start giving my body more of what it needs and less of what it “craves”. I’ve certainly tweaked my diet over the last few years to include better, more nutritious food, but I also get easily side tracked by cupcakes and chocolate all too often. I knew if I were going to make a real change, I had to cut out the bad stuff (cake, pizza, chocolate bars, chips, etc.). Wegmans, here I come!

For the last few weeks i’ve focused on eating more veggies, fruits, and healthy fats on a regular basis. Something i’ve always set as a priority, but often fall short in making it a daily thing. Here’s just a few of my favorites:

  • Kale
  • Carrots
  • Peppers
  • Almonds
  • Raspberries
  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Spinach
  • Cashews
  • Tomatoes

And I’ve found healthier snacks to satisfy my sweet tooth.

  • Chia Warrior Bars – Instead of a candy bar
  • Chia Pudding – I make it homemade, but also found “Chia Pod’s” at Wegmans, which are great if i’m in a hurry.
  • Coconut Oil – instead of butter
  • Coconut Water – For making juices and smoothies. I don’t like adding sugar to my blended drinks, so this gives them an extra oomph. I especially love Zico
  • Willamette Valley Granola Chips – The Butter Pecan flavor is seriously good.

Even with all this, my sweet tooth will always be there.  I seriously feel like it takes a few days to purge the sugar from my system and get past the cravings. Then, the second I take even a single bite of something sweet ‘BOOM’ my body goes into full crave mode for the next couple of days. And it’s only like this with sweets… not pizza, chips, or anything else. Knowing how much I will crave sweets after having them has helped me say no when i’m just not really wanting them (I don’t need to eat the free cookies and brownies at work just because they’re there for the taking).  And the longer I go without all the snacks and junk food, the easier its become to pass on them and choose a healthier snack instead.

My goal isn’t to turn my back on sweets 100% of the time. I will totally admit when Jason and I travel anywhere, I get super excited to seek out local cupcake shops.  In my opinion, its absolutely okay to enjoy desert in moderation, but it’s nice not to feel so incredibly ravenous when i’m around a box of cupcakes. I also love going out to eat on date nights and getting something that I normally wouldn’t have at home.

Another important part of getting healthy is of course working out and staying active. This is something Jason and I have to constantly focus on making time for. And since it’s not always possible to be active outdoors, Amazon Prime is a huge help! I’ve found a handful of great videos that give me a challenging workout.
