Vacation Globes

I’m not sure who else got a ton of snow last week, but here in Northern Virginia, we got more than we have in probably 4 years. Although it doesn’t count as a blizzard by any means, we got enough to keep us cooped up inside for a few days. It was also enough for Jason and I to have a snowball fight, make a snow angel, and attempt to build a snow man. It’s crazy to think we got that much snow less than a week ago, yet today it was over 60 degrees outside. Basically, we’ve got nice soggy ground EVERYWHERE.

This is what I was greeted with when I opened my front door last Thursday.

Maybe it was all the snow, or because of Valentines Day, but I was a complete junk food junkie last week. I basically gave myself a free pass to be lazy and eat chocolate all week.  The rationalization went kinda like this:

– It’s so rare to have so much snow, so I should just enjoy it and eat chocolate.

– Since it’s snowing we can’t go get real food, so I’ll just have a little more chocolate.

– Valentines day is coming up, it’s an unwritten rule to eat chocolate on this day.

-Well, Valentines day has arrived, I’m going to celebrate by eating all the chocolates I have.

Luckily the chocolate craze has ended and I’ve gotten back to eating greens, grains, and all that other good stuff.

Vacation Globes

Between gorging on chocolates and watching the Olympics (I just love the ice skating portions) I fit in a crafting project that turned out pretty fabulous.

For the past few years I’ve been collecting sand and shells from all of mine and Jason’s vacations. I always told him I was going to do something creative one day to memorialize our trips. A trillion pounds of sand later, I still hadn’t come up with a fun way to display it.  I originally thought I would make mini “Message Sand in bottles” with labels for each location, but it was darn difficult to find the perfect little bottles. So all these coffee cups (you know, the kind you get at hotel rooms) filled with sand and shells continued to take up space in our basement for way to long. It was time to take action!

I found this DIY project over at the YoungHouseLove blog and decided to give it a try. I’m really glad I did, because these things are great conversation pieces, and they look stellar. I’ve done four so far and plan on displaying them in our guest room which is decorated in a “Beach Cottage” theme.

I know, my painted lettering could use some work:(

Luckily, I was able to find a mini tube of silicone caulk at Home Depot. I would have had a huge mess on my hands if I had to use the caulking gun.

-Now i’m off to start my weekend. See ya later.
